Throughout a turbulent 2020, those most impacted by the events of the past year were certainly the small businesses that had little choice but to scale back and wait things out. Whilst some were lucky enough to get things moving forward again without much of a delay, others were not so lucky and have had to either close or start fresh as things have slowly started to get back to normal – not all were hit as hard though, some in the online space were certainly able to succeed particularly in the entertainment space as the likes of these sites not blocked by Gamstop in the gaming space for example were able to grow despite the difficulties. Other services that have succeeded have been targeted towards helping these smaller business or self-employed individuals get back out there again, and some have become essential.

It had already been noted that many people were turning to platforms like Fiverr as a bit of side job to work through whilst their own position may have been slowing down – by offering a way to advertise services much in the way a freelancer would be without the knowledge needed to freelance or set up on your own, it has certainly changed the perspective for some, but the slower recovery for many has meant the representation on these platforms has instead turned into a full time position, with many even able to set up a new business off the back of the success.
The same certainly remained true for businesses in a similar way but on the more creative side with other platforms like Etsy doing much of the same and for some being credited as the reason their business was able to survive or even thrive throughout the past year – as things get back to normal, offices open to normal capacity once again, and restrictions are lifted, it may not be all that uncommon to see individuals now turning to these platforms as an essential whilst working remotely to bring in a second stream of income, as diversity to many has now become key to avoid falling into a similar situation once more.
Given how successful this opportunity has been, it may also be likely to see other sites pop up too – the ability to advertise your professional services without being tied to any contract or long standing deal has been invaluable, and even used as a tool for further developing skills it could prove to be extremely impactful in changing some working spaces, and even developing the way freelance and start-up work is conducted as a whole as the experiences gained through these platforms can teach a lot about what to expect going out on your own.
