As a small business owner, it’s so easy to get lost. You’re your own boss, you’re following a different path to that of your friends and family, and you’re keeping a close eye on your biggest competitors. But it’s important not to lose sight of what really matters: building an organisation that does good and delivers to your customers, your staff, and vitally, to you.
Below, we’ve rounded up seven simple tips that will change the way you run your business.
Focus on you
It’s all well and good winning a new client and growing your business in a new territory, but what’s the point if you’re unhappy? Above all else, take some time to look after yourself and put your needs ahead of the needs of your business and clients. Get enough sleep, eat well, and work on destressing techniques like meditation that’ll keep you performing at your best.
Stop reinventing the wheel
You’re a talented, successful entrepreneur, but you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. See what is working within the industry and see how you can do a better job of it. It’s natural to want to make as many changes as possible to “disrupt the sector”, but sometimes you need to take a leaf out of other peoples’ books and stick with the status quo. Don’t change your business for the sake of it, and find a solution that works and stick with it – no messing about.
Know when to ask for help
You can’t do everything on your own, so consider outsourcing aspects of your business to save yourself time and money. From marketing and sales to cleaning and security services offered by an FM provider, shop around and outsource as much as you comfortably can.
Allow for flexibility
Things don’t always go the way you want them to, so allow for some flexibility when you’re running your business. Set aside a few hours per week to work on projects that come in at the last minute, accept that your staff are going to need to take some time off for personal reasons, and stop leaving things until the last minute. Being organised and flexible is key.
Don’t take it so seriously
We all want to achieve greatness and have a happy, prosperous life, but who really cares if you add an extra 10% to your turnover this year? Try not to take running a business so seriously – after all, you’re supposed to enjoy what you do. Work should always be good fun!
Have time outside of work
It’s natural to want to work all hours under the sun to get things done, but you can’t. Make sure you take some time outside of work to focus on you and your family; book a vacation, join a club, volunteer at a local food bank. Unwinding away from the office is so important.
Make people smile
Finally, focus on making people smile. The happiness of your customers should be a top priority, and keeping your staff feeling and performing at their best is also vital. Make it your mission to make someone smile every day – you’ll put a smile on your own face in doing so.
