Buying a used car is a good option for many people who can’t afford a new one. It gives you the comfort of having a car while not having to pay too much. However, there are many things that could go wrong in buying a used car from a private seller.
The two main problems with buying from a private seller are that the car could be a stolen one or it could be a written-off vehicle. In both the cases, you will end up having a lot of problems. The best thing to do is a REVS check WA before you purchase a car from a private seller. But, just in case you have purchased a written-off car, there are some ways out of it.
What Is A Written-Off Car?
A written-off car is one which is too costly to repair and run on the road. There are two kinds of written-off cars.
A Repairable Written-Off Car is one that has been evaluated as being too costly to repair. But these can be re-registered subject to state laws. The vehicles must pass the vehicle safety and identity checks.
A Statutory Written-Off car is one that has been declared as unfit to be used on the road due to severe damage or deterioration which prevents these vehicles from being driven.
Can A Repairable Written-Off Car Be Sold?
You can sell a repairable written-off car, but it would fetch you a very low price. You must get the mechanical check done on the vehicle. You also will have to get the Vehicle Identification Validation check done to ensure that it is not a vehicle which was stolen and sold.
There may be other restrictions for selling a repairable written-off car, which you will have to check with your state or territorial authorities.
Taking The Precaution
The best way is to get the VIN number check done on the PPSR to ensure that the vehicle is not a written off one. You will get a Written-Off Vehicles Report or WOVR along with your PPSR certificate. This was introduced to stop the sale of the rebirthed car.
A rebirthed car is one which is stolen but sold using the VIN number of a written-off car. The check on the PPSR will tell you whether the car with the VIN number has been written-off. This can warn you that you are buying a stolen car if the car looks new and not like a written-off car.
This information is received in the PPSR from the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System or NEVDIS. The information will show what incident caused the write-off. It will also show the damage location, the severity of the damage and type of damage.
When you buy a car from an auction house or dealer, they usually have a sticker saying that the car is a written-off car and what kind of write-off it is. Sometimes when you purchase the car it may not be mentioned as written-off in the WOVR due to delays in processing. It will be added later, in which case you must get a Vehicle Identity Validation certification done to ensure it is roadworthy.
